Behind the Screen: What is IMAX “CoLa”?
If you are a regular moviegoer checking out projector specs or scrolling through online film forums, you might have run across a curious acronym: CoLa.
While it sounds like a movie-theater snack or a clever mashup of a soft drink and a giant screen, “CoLa” is actually a major piece of Hollywood engineering. In the projection booth, CoLa stands for Commercial Laser—specifically, IMAX’s single-projector 4K laser system designed for commercial movie theaters.
Why CoLa Exists
For decades, IMAX relied on traditional xenon bulb projection systems. While they had their charm, they struggled over time with brightness decay and contrast limitations, especially on massive screens.
Enter the laser revolution. IMAX developed high-end laser systems to dramatically upgrade picture quality. While their top-tier system (GT Laser) uses a massive dual-projector setup built for giant, domed, or bespoke curved screens, it isn’t practical or financially viable for every standard multiplex layout.
To bridge that gap, IMAX introduced the CoLa system. It delivers laser-sharp clarity, vibrant colors, and deep blacks using a single 4K laser projector.
Key Features of the CoLa Experience
- Richer Colors and Contrast: Because it uses laser light sources instead of burning bulbs, CoLa systems produce a much wider color spectrum and sharper contrast. Explosions pop with fiery intensity, and space scenes look genuinely inky and dark.
- The 1.90:1 Aspect Ratio: CoLa projectors are typically optimized for screens with a 1.90:1 aspect ratio. While it doesn’t stretch to the ultra-tall 1.43:1 ratio found in select specialty venues, it still provides a vastly expanded, immersive view compared to standard cinema screens.
- Reliability and Brightness Consistency: Traditional bulbs dim noticeably the longer they are used. Laser systems maintain a high, consistent level of brightness screening after screening, ensuring your hundredth visit looks just as good as opening night.
Is it Better Than Standard Digital?
For most film fans, stepping into an auditorium equipped with IMAX with Laser (CoLa) is a noticeable step up. Combined with IMAX’s signature immersive multi-channel sound systems, it turns a regular blockbuster viewing into a high-octane sensory experience.
So, next time you are booking tickets and notice your local theater boasts an IMAX CoLa setup, you’ll know you’re getting a state-of-the-art laser picture—even if it doesn’t come with a side of actual soda!
