The Endless Groove: How to Master the Art of the YouTube Song Repeat
We’ve all been there. You stumble upon a track so hypnotically catchy, an acoustic version so emotionally devastating, or a beat so undeniably infectious that hearing it just once feels like a crime. You need it on loop. For hours. Background music while you work, study, clean, or stare blankly at a wall.
In the early days of internet streaming, keeping a song on repeat meant manually hitting the rewind button or awkwardly copying-pasting URLs into sketchy third-party loop websites. Fortunately, platforms have evolved. Whether you are listening on a desktop browser, a mobile app, or YouTube Music, putting a YouTube song on repeat is easier than ever—once you know where to look.
1. On Desktop: The Two-Click Magic
If you’re listening to YouTube via a computer browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge), you don’t need any extensions or complex workarounds. YouTube has a native feature built directly into the player.
- The Right-Click Method: Open your desired music video, right-click anywhere directly on the video player (make sure you aren’t right-clicking on the control bar at the bottom).
- A clean context menu will pop up. Simply click Loop.
- Note: If your browser’s default right-click menu appears instead, just right-click a second time, and YouTube’s custom menu will override it.
Once enabled, a small checkmark or active state will keep that single track playing into infinity.
2. On Mobile (iOS & Android): The Playlist Trick & Native Settings
Looping a video on the mobile app can sometimes feel slightly hidden due to mobile interface changes, but you have reliable paths to achieve endless playback.
Option A: The Settings Menu
- Tap the video to open the overlay controls while it’s playing.
- Tap the Settings (gear icon) in the corner of the player.
- Look for Additional Settings or a direct Loop Video toggle and switch it on.
Option B: The Playlist Workaround (Foolproof)
If the native toggle isn’t showing up on your app version, the classic playlist method never fails:
- Tap the Save (plus icon) button beneath the video.
- Create a New Playlist (name it something simple like “Loop”) and set it to Private.
- Go to your Library/Playlists, open that playlist, and hit play.
- Tap the Loop icon (two crossing arrows forming a circle) beneath the player to lock it onto continuous single-track repeat.
3. Dedicated Streaming: YouTube Music
If you’re using YouTube Music specifically for your audio tracks, the process is streamlined to mirror traditional music streaming services:
- On Mobile: Tap the album art or swipe up on the player to reveal your playback options. Look for the Repeat icon (two looping arrows). Tap it once to repeat the whole queue, and tap it a second time until a small “1” appears inside or beside the icon. That locks it onto Repeat One.
- On Desktop: Look right next to the play/pause or shuffle controls at the bottom player bar for the repeat toggle, clicking it until the track icon designates single-song looping.
Why Do We Love the Repeat Button?
Psychologists have long studied why humans love looping songs. Listening to a favorite track releases a steady stream of dopamine, and re-listening to a familiar song activates the brain’s predictive processing—we find comfort in knowing exactly when the beat drops, the high note hits, or the guitar solo kicks in.
By mastering these built-in shortcuts, you can immerse yourself fully in your favorite audio loops without ever needing to manually hit replay again.
