The Sound of the Urals: The Story and Rise of 4K (4’K)

When talking about the gritty, authentic underbelly of Russian underground hip-hop, few regional groups have captured the spirit of the streets quite like 4K (4’K). Hailing from the Ural region (specifically Yekaterinburg and nearby towns), this rap duo has carved out a distinct lane for themselves, blending raw street realities, car culture, and classic boom-bap aesthetics.

Origins and Formation

The group consists of Stanislav Griboedov (Steep 4’K) and Alexey Devyatikh (Kaktus 4’K). Both grew up in the Sverdlovsk Oblast area—Steep in Yekaterinburg and Kaktus in the nearby urban settlement of Reftinsky.

Individually, both members began experimenting with music and writing rhymes in the mid-2000s, influenced by local hip-hop currents, electronic music, and the broader wave of Russian underground rap. After crossing paths online and discovering a shared circle of interests—which famously included a love for rap music and customized cars (“taziki”)—they officially formed the duo 4K in late 2009.

The Name and Meaning

Fans often wonder where the moniker comes from. According to the group:

  • The number 4 represents a lucky or significant number for the members.
  • The letter K is a nod to hip-hop slang referencing cash or currency, as well as tying into their foundational roots and shared lifestyle.

Musical Style and Themes

4K’s music is defined by its unapologetic realism. Unlike glossy mainstream pop-rap, their tracks lean heavily into atmospheric, dark, and heavy basslines characteristic of regional Russian street rap. Their lyrics paint vivid pictures of neighborhood life (“padiki”), local youth culture, loyalty, and nighttime drives under tinted windows (“katany”).

Over the years, they have built a massive cult following, dropping notable projects like Matovy (2011), VKRUG, Vзорванный, and the sequel Matovy 2. Tracks like “Po Kayfu”, “Tikho iz dvorov”, and “Perekupskaya” have pulled in millions of views, cementing their status as heavyweights of the Ural underground scene.

Legacy and Evolution

Despite changing trends in the modern music industry, 4K has stayed true to their core sound. They continue to release material independently and collaborate with other regional underground staples, proving that raw storytelling and genuine local flavor will always find a dedicated audience.
