Unlocking Your Personal Soundtrack: How to Add Custom Songs to Spotify
Have you ever wanted to listen to that rare remix, an unreleased track, a custom mashup, or a personal recording right alongside your main Spotify playlists? While Spotify hosts millions of songs officially, it also features a built-in powerhouse feature called Local Files. This capability allows you to bridge the gap between your downloaded audio files and your streaming library.
Whether you want to spin up your tracks on a desktop or sync them to your phone for offline listening on the go, this step-by-step guide covers everything you need to know.
Part 1: Setting Up Local Files on Desktop (Windows & Mac)
The desktop application is where the magic starts. Because of file system restrictions, Spotify cannot scan your phone’s internal storage directly—so you must import and organize your custom songs via your computer first.
- Open the Spotify Desktop App: Ensure you are logged into your account. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and select Settings (or use
Ctrl + ,on Windows /Cmd + ,on Mac). - Locate Local Files: Scroll down the settings menu until you find the section labeled Your Library, and toggle Show Local Files to ON.
- Add Your Music Source:
- Spotify will automatically suggest default folders where music usually lives (like your computer’s “Downloads” or “My Music” folders).
- To use a custom folder, click Add a source and select the specific folder on your hard drive containing your audio tracks.
- Access Your Tracks: Head over to the left sidebar in Spotify, click on Your Library, and look for the Local Files folder or playlist. All compatible audio files within your chosen source folder will instantly appear here.
Supported Formats: Spotify supports standard unencrypted audio files, primarily MP3, MP4, and M4P. Note that Apple’s lossless format (M4A) or video-heavy MP4 files may not always parse correctly.
Part 2: Syncing Custom Songs to Your Phone (iOS & Android)

Step 1: Create a Playlist
On your desktop app, right-click your newly imported local tracks (or select multiple) and choose Add to playlist -> New playlist. Give the playlist a distinct name (
