Song Kang: The Journey and Rise of South Korea’s “Son of Netflix”
In recent years, few actors have captured the global K-drama audience’s heart quite like Song Kang (송강). With his striking visuals, versatile acting range, and an impressive string of hit streaming series, he has cemented his status as a premier Hallyu star.
1. Early Life and the Spark of Inspiration
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song grew up in an athletic household—his father was an artistic gymnast and his grandfather a traditional wrestler. Despite inheriting an athletic build, Song spent his youth exploring various interests, from interior design to architecture, without a definitive career path.
Everything changed when he watched Leonardo DiCaprio in the classic film Titanic. Captivated by DiCaprio’s expressive gaze and emotional depth, Song experienced a sudden, powerful calling to become an actor. He went on to major in Film Arts at Konkuk University, laying the academic and technical groundwork for his future profession. Before fully committing to acting, he turned down multiple casting offers from idol entertainment agencies, choosing to keep his focus strictly on the screen.
2. Stepping into the Spotlight and the “Son of Netflix” Era
Song made his official acting debut in 2017 with a supporting role in the tvN romantic-comedy The Liar and His Lover, followed by a part in the family drama Man in the Kitchen. Eager to build experience, he also expanded into variety television, showcasing his charm as a fixed cast member on Village Survival, the Eight and hosting the music show Inkigayo in 2018.
His massive breakthrough arrived in 2019 when he beat out massive competition in auditions to star as Hwang Sun-oh in the Netflix original romance series Love Alarm. The global success of the show catapulted him into international stardom.
Because so many of his subsequent, defining hits premiered or streamed globally on the platform, media and fans affectionately dubbed him the “Son of Netflix.” Notable streaming and broadcast successes followed rapid-fire:
- Sweet Home (2020–2024): Displayed his gritty, intense side as Cha Hyun-soo, a troubled teenager fighting for survival in a monster-filled apocalyptic world.
- Navillera (2021): Proved his emotional depth playing a young, struggling ballet dancer who forms a touching bond with an older man.
- Nevertheless (2021): Captivated global viewers in a magnetic campus romance alongside Han So-hee.
- Forecasting Love and Weather (2022): Played a bright, free-spirited meteorologist opposite Park Min-young.
- My Demon (2023): Earned widespread acclaim—including the Top Excellence Award at the SBS Drama Awards—for his charismatic portrayal of a supernatural demon who loses his powers.
3. Personal Life and Recent Milestones
Off-screen, Song is known by his loyal fandom, Songpyeon (송편), to be a gentle, introverted individual (with an INTP personality type) who enjoys quiet hobbies like reading, playing the piano, and gaming.
